The Appearance of Swamiji as I saw Him
I was fond of meeting Saints and Sages from my childhood. My father was a deeply religious man and he used to entertain Saints and Sages at home. Among them, there used to be a very learned men with a profound knowledge of God and his creation. I used to hear the discourses among my father and the visiting saints and by and by I developed an unquenching thirst for knowing about the origin of the Universe and existance of God in there. In this way I had a natural affinity and respect for the saints.
Swamiji had come to Kullu some where in 1964 and used to stay under the Peepal tree in upper Akhara Bazar, where now 'Akhand Bhuna' continues.
I used to go there in the evening after the school and have chit chat with Swamiji on the topics of Indian thoughts and philosophy. Like what is Atma?; What is Paramatma?; How can we realize existance of God and from where this Atma comes and where it goes after death.
Time passed on and Swamiji and I continued our eveing sittings off and on.
In 1966, I was appointed as the Lecturer in Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Kullu and I used to come back home by 2:00pm on foot to home. One day I saw Swamiji sitting on the grit on the road near Beasa. It was a summer afternoon - he was sitting there in the hot sun without any shades - I was sweating as this was the hottest moth of the year and Swamiji was sitting smiling in a happy mood. I said - Namaskar Swamiji and sat beside him and we started the usual discussion about God and other aspects of realization. Gradually, being in my youth I too was not bothered about the hot sun and become confortable with the burning heat of the sun. I was enjoying the chit chat with Swamiji.
In a while, Swamiji asked me to leave - he said - Go home and rest - Baba is doing Sadhna here and why are you bothering yourself. This was our first meeting in the hot burning sun, where Baba was sitting on a grit - this has left an indelible impression on my mind for whole my life. I was amazed to see how a man can be so happy sitting on a hot grit along the road side. Then I too started sitting with him and talk on different matters daily after coming from school.
